The Chrysler Electronic Voice Alert (EVA) Page

You have reached the only page on the web dedicated to the explaination, installation and preservation of the Chrysler Electronic Voice Alert!  The Electronic voice alert was available in Chrysler and Dodge vehicles from 1983 to 1988.

The voice alert came in two versions - the 11 function unit and the 24 function unit which included an electronic message center.  Chrysler New Yorkers had the 11 function unit through 1988, the last model to offer the voice alert.  1984 to 1986 Daytonas and Lasers had the 24 and 11 function EVA as options. The 1987 LeBaron (J body) had the 24 function unit as on earlier Daytonas.  In 1988 the J body no longer had the voice alert, but was available with a 24 function vehicle monitoring system.  This was simply the EVA without the speech synthesis module.  The 11 function EVA units sold in Canada spoke French and English! A few of the 24 function French EVA units were produced for the Canadian market. EVA design documents list a Spanish speaking unit also, but I don't know how many were actually produced.

I am putting this page together to document the process of installing the 24 function EVA in my 1988 and 1987 Daytonas.  The EVA was last offered in the Daytona (and Chrysler Laser) in 1986. Please write me if you have additional information on the EVA or corrections for this page. I am very interested in obtaining French and Spanish speaking EVA units - 24 function or 11 function.

I will cover only the 24 function EVA in detail at this time.  I will add info on the 11 function unit later. The 24 function EVA has two major components:

1. Speech Synthesis Unit - located above the glove box, replaces standard warning chimes

2. Electronic Monitor - Message center display located above the radio

 

Parts needed for an EVA installation

Many of the standard sensors feed information to the EVA.  Additionally, 24 function EVA equipped cars came with the following special sensors:

Coolant level sensor - Located in the radiator overflow tank

Brake fluid level sensor - replaces the rear filler cap on the master brake cylinder

Rear light outage sensor - Monitors brake light and tail light filaments, located in left rear quarter panel

Headlight outage sensor - Monitors low beam headlights, located on left side of fuse block

Brake pad wear sensor - Special pads with wire attach points. 

Engine oil level - A resistance based sensor.  1984 only - the sole troublesome EVA part.

The above links will give you enough information to get started if you are installing an EVA unit. You need the factory service manual and wiring diagrams for your car to make sure you hook up the EVA properly. This page specifically addresses the units found in the Dodge Daytona/Chrysler Laser. Other EVA vehicles have additional wires for rear doors, etc.
